Rosanna & Africa by Toto

toto

Do you still remember the 80’s greatest hits “Rosanna” and “Africa”, yes it’s from the legendary band Toto. David Paich (keyboards, vocals), Steve Lukather (guitar, vocals), Bobby Kimball (vocals), Steve Porcaro (keyboards), David Hungate (bass), Jeff Porcaro (drums), formed the band in Los Angeles in 1978. It was in their high school when they met and since then they became the busiest session musicians in the music industry.

“Rosanna” came from the album Toto IV, the hit song won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Instrumental Arrangement with Vocal and Toto IV won the awards for album of the year. Just additional trivia about this song, do you know where did they get the title “Rosanna”?

It was named from the actress Rosanna Arquette, who the keyboard player Steve Porcaro was dating that time. The song was written by the band leader David Paich. But it was really Paich who has a first love named Rosanna, but he just tagged another Rosanna for the song since Steve was dating Rosanna Arquette at that time.

“Africa” still came from the album Toto IV, and still the keyboardist and their band leader wrote the song, David Paich. A man comes to Africa and fell in love in the country and he need to make a decision about the girl who comes to see him, but if he going to choose the girl he needs to leave Africa.

There is some magical reason why we are captivated by the beautiful songs that they influenced us. Not to compare with new generation music. Toto is just one of many legendary bands from the past that always gives us chills when it comes to giving music to its listeners. Why do we love them? Why we can’t resist but to always listen to their songs. Questions that until now we cannot find answers to.
