The Impossible Dream: Digging the Oldies Part 2

The Impossible Dream

What is it with old songs that we can’t stop singing today? We have a lot of music in the present to choose from, but why do we keep going back and dig in our antique chests of music arsenals or for techies, their sleek Apple or Androids, for old music?

One of the those golden records we can’t help but sing along in the bathroom, bedroom, karaoke bars, or wherever you are during that time it came on play is the all-time favorite “The Impossible Dream (The Quest).”

“The Impossible Dream (The Quest)” was written by Joe Darion and composed by Mitch Leigh for the original Broadway cast album of the musical show Man of La Mancha in 1965, in which Richard Kiley sung the song. Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th century Don Quixote masterpiece inspired the play, wherein the song was sung three times. It won five Tony Awards including Best Musical. Since then, its principal song “The Impossible Dream” was revived four times in the Broadway.

It became one of the most lasting piece in the musical theater with different countries borrowing the song as it became a part of the norm of musical production. Not long after 1965, it was again sung in the film under the title Man of La Macha which is the same to its Broadway show.

“The Impossible Dream” has fueled many notable renditions by different artists after it’s released in 1965 to present. It includes performance by different musical icons such as Frank Sinatra on his album “That’s Life” in 1966, Johnny Mathis on his “So Nice” of the same year, Cher on her album “Backstage” in 1968, and Elvis Presley’s live performance on Madison Square in 1972. It has also became an anthem to different sports and political happenings such as the Boston Red Sox legendary winning in 1967 and the assassination of Evelio Javier, a governor in Antique Philippines, during the Martial Law, respectively.

Since then, this song has made appearances on different chapter of human – personal or collective – history, specifically during the times when their dreams, they thought to be just far way stars, are now within their reach.
