Flashlight by Jessie J.

Jessie-J-Flashlight

British singer-songwriter Jessie J. is at it again as she recorded another pop ballad that will be the Pitch Perfect 2’s chief soundtrack. However, what’s another “chief” is the question, will it plummet or soar?

“Flashlight” recorded by Jessie J. was first available at United States as a pre-ordered track of the film Pitch Perfect 2, which will be hitting the theaters on the 15th of May this year.

The single was now available in the United Kingdom in a digital format, as it was released both as a stand-alone single and official soundtrack last May 10, 2015 under Republic Records. This single was co-written by Sia Furler, Christian Guzman, Jason Moore and Sam Smith.

The track was said to be lacking the Jessie J. signature of shout-singing that was evident in her previous singles. It was stuck in the lukewarm water as it was neither cold enough to raise goose bumps, nor hot enough to scale the iconic ladders of success, which are in the forms of Billboard charts to name a few.

Steven J. Horowitz of Billboards has described this new single in the grayer side of the spectrum as he said “Jessie J dials back her vocal force on the tepid “Flashlight,” off the Pitch Perfect 2 soundtrack. The more subtle delivery would be welcome if the track weren’t so paint-by-numbers – it plays like a pantomime of a Sia ballad, but without the emotive edge.”

Despite of this, the just-released single is currently scaling the US Pop Digital Songs at the 46th place the US Billboard Twitter Top tracks at the 24th – and I repeat, it was just released.

The song itself was not actually bad, in fact, Jessie J’s mellow approach on the song conveyed a hopeful perspective as she sung “I got all I need when I got you and I, I look around me, and see sweet life” and despite of darkness there’s a joyful tone layered beneath the cynicism of the first verse that was brought out at the song’s chorus.

What may have brought the song down was the confusing video. It did not click, as the cheery atmosphere of the post-graduate feels did not mesh up smoothly with the guy and gal breaking up then enters some clip of Pitch Perfect. It was hard to decipher what is it they want to convey affecting even the song itself.

Summing it up, the single has a chance to soar, especially with the Pitch Perfect 2 coming in theaters in just a few more days. Hopefully, we will understand the song – and the video, too – more fully here.
