Contrary to what will come in to your mind when you heard Sia’s “Big Girls Cry,” I’m telling you, it’s not a reply to Fergie’s famous “Big Girls Don’t Cry;” although it certainly sounds like it.
“Big Girls Cry” is not your song if you plan on a cheerful, sunny vacation by the beach – unless of course it’s your summer preference, to which I have no right to judge.
However, by no means I am saying that this single by Sia is any less than her previous chart-toppers. In fact, this song, in its simplicity, has the potential to be another chart-topping single if it was only released internationally. Yes, Big Girls Cry was not internationally released. Australia and some parts of Europe are the only privileged countries.
“Big Girls Cry” was from her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear. It was released last June 25, 2014 at countries Belgium, Finland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland on a digital format under the labels Monkey Puzzle and RCA. It was just recently released in the United Kingdom last April 2, 2015.
However, despite scattered releases, it still was able to scale the charts of Australia at 17th position, France at 18th, and Israel at 7th, to name a few. It also attracted controversies with Illuminati, mind control, and child exploitation in the preference of the newly released music video featuring the 12-year old Maddie Ziegler, to which Sia did not bother answering.
Looking past these controversies, Big Girls Cry is nothing more than a cry for women “in the fast lane” who you see as a “tough girl,” as they have “no time for love, no time for hate, no drama, no time for games” but “whose soul [really] aches.” And they will cry – yes they will – “ruining [their] makeup” to “Wash away all the things you’ve taken.” They won’t care if they “don’t look pretty,” because “Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking.”
