Albums That Are Worth Millions

When we say one million, we all know for a fact that this number is huge. May it be amount money, the number of people going to a mass rally or the count of grains of sand all over the world, this number is difficult to even recite from the smallest digit to the highest one.

A million is something that also denotes the grandest things, the most expensive ones, and the well-celebrated. In the music industry, millions and millions of money are being generated every single day and this eight-digit number is something that can be witnessed every single day.

One million copies of albums sold, a couple of million downloads in iTunes, hundreds of millions of fans following on Vimeo or an artist’s official YouTube Channel, wherever you lean your vision or lend your hearing into, million or millions on its strictest sense is nothing but a normal number.

Listed below are some of the most sold albums of all time, in all genres, in the music scene in general. Whilst most of them had discrepancies along the way, it is said that the recorded number of albums sold as declared are at its 90% truest form.

Most of the most noted associations who give awards and certifications to artists or brands or bands regarding the amount or number of albums sold are the RIAA and Music Canada for United States and Canada respectively.

For the highest sales grossed for an album sold, the late Michael Jackson’s 1982 smash album Thriller had taken the top spot with claimed sales ranging from 51-65 million US Dollars. Due to Michael Jackson’s heat during the release of the album and on the lead single of the same name as the album, it is no wonder that the King of Pop had easily topped the list.

Progressive rock band Pink Floyd followed Jackson’s trail with their album The Dark Side of the Moon released in 1973. It had a declared a whopping 45 million US Dollars of sales. Closing the top 3 spot is the late Whitney Houston’s album for the movie of the same name, The Bodyguard with other artists performing on the said record.

This soundtrack slash R&B slash soul slash pop album which was released in 1992 is a million shy away from Pink Floyd’s 45 million record. Three albums of 1977 had also joined the list which is Meatloaf’s Bat out of Hell album, Bee Gees’ Saturday Night Fever and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours with 43 million US Dollars, and 40 million US dollars apiece respectively.

On the 30-39 million US dollar group, country singer Shania Twain topped the legion of achievers with Come on Over album released in 1997. This country-pop release had garnered 39 million US dollars of sales worldwide.

Setting hard and alternative rock’s torch is Led Zeppelin and Alanis Morissette for albums Led Zeppelin IV and Jagged Little Pill with 37 and 33 million US dollars of sales. Solo singers slash divas Celine Dion with album Falling Into You (1996) and Mariah Carey with Music Box (1993) joined this esteemed list both harnessing 32 million US dollars in declared sales.

Closing the 30-39 million class are bands Pink Floyd, Santana and Guns N’ Roses, all under progressive / metal rock genre, getting a 30-million mark for years 1979, 1999 and 1987 respectively.
Well-known and modern artists crowd the 20-29 million group and most of those on the list are from the 1990s to the Millennial era. For the last three years (2012-2014), here are the three most notable albums in terms of sales worldwide — Brit singer Adele topped 2012 with album 21 and harnessed 8.3 million US dollars on copies sold, Brit band One Direction and their album Midnight Memories ended 2013 with a flying 4.0 million US dollars mark and album slash soundtrack Frozen by Various Artists just sealed 2014 with 10 million US dollars of sales generated.
