Philippine music evolution

opm-

Music has been evolving since time immemorial. This advancement of music has led to an immense diversity of music that all people of all walks of life can appreciate.

Artists, who make good music, are acclaimed and well-regarded for their talents, aside from having all the perks of being renowned, the reputation and riches they acquire, and recently this has led to many aspiring musicians.

Music in the Philippines includes musical performance arts by Filipinos composed in various genres and styles. The compositions are frequently a combination of different Asian, European, Latin American, American, and indigenous influences.

As long as the culture continues to change there will be a reflection of this in the music that is composed. From primal music, traditional, there is also the pre-hispanic, Rondalla, until the classic Harana and Kundiman emerged.

Original Pilipino Music, now more commonly termed Original Pinoy Music, or OPM for short, originally referred only to Philippine pop songs, particularly ballads. This marked the era of Modern Filipino music.

American lifestyle and pop culture gave rise to music created by Filipinos using western pop forms. Referred to as Pinoy pop it includes a wide range of forms: folk songs, dance tunes, ballads, Broadway type songs, rock’ n’ roll, disco, jazz, and rap. Underground bands also emerged and along with them were their perceptions of optimism and assertiveness.

OPM pop, Bossa Nova and Latino, acoustic covers, soul, as well as RnB have been regularly showcased in the live band scene. New technology was also introduced in the Philippines that paved the way for many new styles. This technology was the use of digital effects that were placed into songs.

This technology was brought into the center of pop culture with classic disco, electropop and trance music. Most of these changes in music have been due to the culture, and more directly the culture of the present generation.

These main streams of Philippine music– indigenous, Hispanic music, American/European influenced, and popular music comprise what we refer to today as Philippine music.

Our country, as well as other nations, has started several trends and fads in regards to music, and we will continue to do so. If there was to be a halt in the music industry, there would need to be a standstill in the culture.

However the culture of the youth has been continuously changing at an increasing pace. And with all of this transformation there is no sign that the music industry is going to decelerate.

New songs are always going to be composed, and new styles of music will always be coming to the surface. Having an insight and familiarity of the popular music in a culture gives a person deep understanding on the values of the culture, because a population’s culture is a direct reflection of their music.
