Melanie Martinez - “Soap”

Soap

Melanie Martinez is from a Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, who, in spite of failing to bag the first prize in the prominent vocal talent show, The Voice, has managed to capture the interests of the crowd instead with her hauntingly ethereal vocals and strange style of dressing like dolls in frilly dresses and usually bubble gum two-toned hair.

While we already have established her vocals to be out of this world, Melanie Martinez did not go the path other artists – like Ellie Goulding – with a golden voice like hers did. Instead, Martinez ditch the makings of your traditional pop star.

The perfect makeup, and the perfect curls are traded for a Barbie-gone wrong look, giving off the Goth-girl vibe. Though this in itself is not original, Melanie Martinez stands in the current mainstream with her portrayal of childlike wonder twisted to resemble a jaded view on life. Genuine and powerful, her music kind of music knows how to leave its mark.

Her single, “Soap,” has the same formula of her previous songs; although a bit more lighthearted. The track was lifted off her first LP,“Cry Baby,” which will be out in digital format on August 14 but can already be pre-ordered in physical bundles since the middle of July.

“Soap” revolved around the message of having said too much you wish you had not. It is an everyday case of every person, which is the reason why the piece is easily relatable. It isn’t the only charm of the track.

Melanie Martinez’s theatrics and delivery of the notes and lyrics are as breathy as ever. The track every bit of soul with synth-pop also prominent, especially when you literally hear the bubbles bubbling during the track.

The music video was released the same day as the single last July 10. It was a homemade video directed by Melanie Martinez’ friend’s in a hotel bathtub.
