In seven years, a former street performer may be the next big name in the industry, and the industry’s hottest names may have to step back from the limelight. In seven years, an artist may make a name for a quick blazing burn before fading out, or for an artist to start with a soft glow and steadily shine brighter. In seven years, talents come and go and generations of listeners change their taste in music. Those are the reasons why a hiatus that long is comparable to step on a field with land mines. Familiar, yet risky.
For any of her fan, you already know who the subject of this article would be even without the title. The music community thought Janet Jackson has permanently bid her goodbye to the music industry. After her 2008 album Discipline failed to make its mark to the listeners followed by another two flops and a wardrobe malfunction, she has finally signed off of her career with her songs having no trace on the radio- and yes, together with her. For the new kids who recently just acquired an interest in music past Janet years will ask, “Who is she?”
With the new audience and new ideas determining what’s new in music, making a comeback would be hard, especially for someone who have created no build up, no fanfare, and minimum buzz. In which the charm lies there and the fact that she is Janet Jackson; the one who made a great influence on pop music since the 80s through creating albums after albums together with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis that hooks listeners and made her an icon.
As the saying goes, “absence makes the heart fonder… Or wonder.” The former is true for Janet Jackson. With no sightings of her for the past years, fans are craving for some news about her and when some did come, the once cold name becomes hot again and she steps back into the music industry welcomed warmly.
And as the fans have welcomed her back with arms wide open, the question is, would she sustain the buzz in her name? As a matter of fact, yes. The excitement of her comeback is yet to tone down.
She’s currently on a tour with sold-out venues, and her newly released single “No Sleep” is a chart topper. Music critics also praise her and fans are excited for her album coming this fall. If that does not scream a successful comeback, what else would? And with her name already established back on the shelves of shining trophies, we’re just waiting for her to reclaim the crown – with steady success, it isn’t impossible.
