Melanie Martinez - “Soap”

Soap

Melanie Martinez is from a Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, who, in spite of failing to bag the first prize in the prominent vocal talent show, The Voice, has managed to capture the interests of the crowd instead with her hauntingly ethereal vocals and strange style of dressing like dolls in frilly dresses and usually bubble gum two-toned hair.

While we already have established her vocals to be out of this world, Melanie Martinez did not go the path other artists – like Ellie Goulding – with a golden voice like hers did. Instead, Martinez ditch the makings of your traditional pop star.

The perfect makeup, and the perfect curls are traded for a Barbie-gone wrong look, giving off the Goth-girl vibe. Though this in itself is not original, Melanie Martinez stands in the current mainstream with her portrayal of childlike wonder twisted to resemble a jaded view on life. Genuine and powerful, her music kind of music knows how to leave its mark.

Her single, “Soap,” has the same formula of her previous songs; although a bit more lighthearted. The track was lifted off her first LP,“Cry Baby,” which will be out in digital format on August 14 but can already be pre-ordered in physical bundles since the middle of July.

“Soap” revolved around the message of having said too much you wish you had not. It is an everyday case of every person, which is the reason why the piece is easily relatable. It isn’t the only charm of the track.

Melanie Martinez’s theatrics and delivery of the notes and lyrics are as breathy as ever. The track every bit of soul with synth-pop also prominent, especially when you literally hear the bubbles bubbling during the track.

The music video was released the same day as the single last July 10. It was a homemade video directed by Melanie Martinez’ friend’s in a hotel bathtub.

Melanie Martinez on another alluringly warped music: “Sippy Cup”

Melanie Martinez in Sippy Cup

What’s the charm in Melanie Martinez’s music? Once you hear it, you have to know who she is. The former The Voice Season 3 contestant has shaped up to be one of the most unique singer pop music has come to know. She breathes out the music, each note seeming to be an enticing whisper of a darling child – husky and innocent – who has come to know the dark side of life far too early.

And there lies the power in her music; the power in which high notes and octaves-high singing cannot achieve. She delivers her music sweet contained in an innocent-looking sippy cup, yet blended well in a delicious amount of deadly syrup – and with this, Melanie Martinez knows how to conquer the industry and the listeners who have heard and yet to hear her music.

With each release of Melanie’s track from her Crybaby album, listeners are spent with too much anticipation. From the canorous turmoil we’ve seen and heard in the album’s lead single “Pity Party” to the bubbly disoriented concordant of “Soap,” the peculiar singer proves that her album should not be missed. And with the recent track released last July 31, Melanie has us captivated yet again, albeit, it is for another twisted musical tale – “Sippy Cup”.

Melanie Martinez has revealed in an interview with the SPIN Magazine that “Sippy Cup” is the “bridge between the Dollhouse EP and the Cry Baby album.” In this track, the singer delved deeper into the bleak family issue of the track “Dollhouse.” She unveils the horror at what “goes down in the kitchen.” And if we thought her previous singles to be grim enough, she puts the wretchedness on a whole new level in “Sippy Cup.”

Onto the sound of the track, it is notably quiet compared to its predecessor. Mostly it is Melanie’s whisper-like vocals that drove the song coupled with a few slow beat and this characteristic answer and blended well with the theme of the song making it a flawless package of murderous song.

The music video is an impressive cut directed by Melanie herself. She’s playing as an angel here only this time, it is not a dress-up moment. After her mother killed her cheating husband by his mistress, the “cry baby” is next on her list killing her through the syrup in a sippy cup.

Cry Baby is already out in the Market, grab a copy now!

A Look Through Melanie Martinez Budding Career

Melanie Martinez

Armed with her haunting vocals and her unique style of two-toned hair and front teeth gap, the Puerto Rican and Dominican descent singer perched herself up on the chair to test where the fate would take her. Singing her own rendition of “Toxic” while playing the guitar and tapping the tambourine with her foot, she placed a spot on team Adam; and while ascending through the stages, the top spot isn’t what she won.

Instead, she left a mark in the hearts of listeners. The gothic girl with a haunting vocals and an obsession of dolls – that has Melanie Martinez has written on it.

After The Voice Season 3, Martinez forged a path of her own as an independent artist; and it isn’t easy is what she reveals. The highs last for minutes while feeling low stays, which is the kind of vulnerability artists felt making it hard to bring one up for the show.

“You’ve got to be able to work hard after,” Martinez advices for anyone who wants to pursue singing. And even if it is a different career, we know hard work always lays the foundation for success.
As you would see now, not winning The Voice Season 3 did not act as a hindrance for Martinez to be successful in her chosen path; it’s quite the contrary. It propels Martinez into growing as an artist together with her music.

She released her EP, “Dollhouse,” May of 2014, which garnered her millions of listeners and still counting. Follow-up from the successful single are stream of hits, too. “Carousel” was featured in American Horror Story “Freak Show,” which is a dream come true for her since she adores the show. “Pity Party” was released last June 2015 and is currently aired in different countries across the globe. “Soap” follows not long after with a promise of the next single, which was released July 31, with the title, “Sippy Cup.”

Apart from Martinez’ unique look, what sets her above the rest is her exploration of the ideals in life only a child not unjaded could be seen and then she sets it up in comparison to the brutal truth concealed in thin veils of pinks and bubblegum-colored setting, which is a staple of her music videos.
Her artistry in writing is also being showcased in her songs. It has the certain kind of lightness even when dwelling to heavy issues setting the tone of her music to borderline insanity.

With her debut album entitled “Cry Baby” set to be released this August and with her currently touring, we’re waiting for Martinez to be a massive name in the industry. ‘Till then, we will be waiting and offer support.
